We aren't using the keyed shaft, because we are using this to pull a wire cable. We attached a "barrel" to the black piece to wind up the cable. It will be mounted upside-down most likely, allowing it to slip off after a while.

You shouldn't place load like that directly on the gear coming out of the motor, it should still be supported by a shaft, pillow blocks and bearings. How hard will you be pulling on this cable?
