I think there are a few things can can help you out.

1. Search http://www.3dcontentcentral.com
2. Buy a retractable USB cable and take it apart
3. Look for inspiration in a tape measure or other retracting mechanism (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...5105809AANfIFg)
