What gives me worry is doing just that. Our final CAD design was not done until around week 5. We start cutting metal on Day 2, before CAD has even started, for certain parts we know we'll use no matter what the design ends up being (sprockets for instance).

If you wait to finish the CAD model before cutting any metal at all, you might have only a CAD model to compete with.
