I'm not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for but generally the easiest way to see that it is not working is if you notice your robot is not shifting. For example, if you shift from low to high gear and there is no noticeable speed change. Upon further, closer inspection you can check and see if the pneumatics are functioning properly (or servos?).

I would also assume that Andymark has something posted about this as well on their website and if it is not posted but they have it you could probably obtain it quite easily with an email. Since this is for an english class, it would also count as a direct source and would probably help your grade on this assignment.
