You would be using IPv4, not v6, most likely.
. Also, my approach to getting this down would be to have an internet connection and to connect to my central database. Instead of a switch, a router with WiFi disabled would be the better approach because typically, routers are easier to manage because they are aimed at general purpose computing at home (Most standard users aren't geeks).
