Solidwork CAD with git

We've traditionally used Dropbox for our CAD file sharing. I've heard (first year cading for me) that there are lots of difficulties involved with sharing CAD files and assemblies over almost any kind of system.

What exactly is going wrong? To me, I can't see why git wouldn't work, unless there are specific file references inside of the assemblies. Which would be a very strange way of doing things.

What is wrong with dropbox? Would git work better? Or, is there something better than both?
