Well I own swimming pool service company and I would use a pool liner repair kit. I have been successful using them to patch tire tubes. Just be careful because the glue might melt the rubber ball. If you get the patch to stick put duck tape over it put it in the cover and fill with air. Try it what do you have to lose you all ready killed it.
