And if you custom make your own strips, and use Charlieplexing or shift registers, you can definitely control all the LEDs from one Arduino. Or even a mega, without charlieplexing or shift registers...
You might also be able to use the GPIO of the digital sidecar to run the lights. The DSC has PWM capability, though I don't know if the pullup resistors can be circumvented...
There's a lot of custom circuits you could make. We've got a trim-pot adjusted voltage regulator for our camera light ring, which is custom made of eight 10 degree viewing range LEDs. (Amazing power, no voltage drop even when the battery falls to 8 volts...)
