During the RoboRIO Q/A at NI Week, it was stated that the inputs and outputs would be well protected against reverse polarity, shorts, and ESD. I suspect that NI has more experience designing robust hardware then FIRST (who designed the DSC) does.

The suicidal DSC wasn't a problem with the IFI controller, and I don't think it should be a problem with the RoboRIO.
