I am unaware of previous robot names or mottoes but this years name has a story:

If you attended the Groton, CT District you know that we had a spring loaded catapult that was pulled back by a pneumatic cylinder and held in place by a 300# magnet that was mounted to a pancake cylinder to pull it from the catapult.

This magnet looked very much like the Arch Reactor. So when coming up with names for the bot we thought: "Iron Man" or "Tony Stark". Whule chewing on that one of the mentors called out "Robot Downey Jr." and we all died laughing so it stuck. We changed to 2 pneumatic cylinders to fire the catapult after Groton but the name stuck.

As many are aware, this years motto is: "truss and destroy".
That's hilarious, guys. It was an honor for GARE-E to take the field with Robert Downey Jr. in St. Louis.

That's right, our 2014 robot was named GARE-E (Globe Acquisition and Relay Engine - Earth class). It basically came about because of how snail-like it appeared when the shooter was up and the intake tucked in starting configuration. Brain storming snail inspired names naturally led to Sponge Bob's pet snail, Gary. We then roboticized it by combining that with WALL-E and developed the acnonymn to fit the game objective. We found it quite catchy and appropriate. Lol
