A surface bounding a solid figure.
2 A surface of an object, especially a surface joining a top and bottom: the four sides of a box.
After def 2, they don't relate to an object. But as you can see, the top is a side, and so is the bottom; side is just a surface. Don't they teach you this in your first geometry class?
If one were to take the rules completely literally, 'around the side' would mean we'd have to wrap the numbers around the side. But clearly that's not the case. Putting a number on top or bottom is still within the rules. The ref may yell at you but there's jack that he/she can do.
