Our elimination policy actually pre-dates FIRST's policy.
We have been doing 4 robot elimination rounds for about 5 years now and will continue this practice.
I highly recommend 4 robot elims for any event.
There are a few reasons that we started doing this.
1- Since we are trying to inspire everyones rookies. There is nothing more inspirational than having your team in the playoffs.
2- More invested teams = more play-off excitement and more screaming spectators.
3- Under the old system, teams that were not selected, packed up and left.
This usually meant that teams with breakdowns could not find a back-up robot very easily. Searching for the next available back-up robot was slowing down match play.
4 robot elimination alliances is a classic Win-Win situation. The only minor cost is Two extra trophies. This is a very small price to pay for all those extra smiles.
