I've also seen a 4-slot cRio freeze up because it ran out of logging space and needed some type of hard reset (we've re-imaged it, not helping)

I'm not sure which logs you are looking for (or where they would be), but you can FTP into your cRIO at
ftp://10.XX.YY.2, or use netconsole at the same address to access the console.
I don't have a cRIO handy, but if you open up either of those and there's a /var/log directory, I would start there.
