Today we have a guest blog from Paul Lazarus, FIRST Executive Advisory Board member and Director/Producer of the film SlingShot.

Dear FIRST Community,

FIRST is very important to me. I’ve been a volunteer for over 20 years: as a Regional and National Judge, member of the Game Design Committee for five seasons, and a longtime member of the Executive Advisory Board. Perhaps, you saw the promotional video I wrote and produced featuring Morgan Freeman.

I’m very grateful that Frank Merrick has invited me to write a “guest blog” regarding using our SlingShot documentary as a both a fundraiser and a way to promote FIRST.

Now that build season is over, the SlingShot team would you like to help you raise some significant funds for your team and spread the word about FIRST.

The SlingShot documentary focuses on FIRST founder Dean Kamen and his work to solve the world’s water crisis. We will help make the process easy. You just need to select a date and get permission to use your school’s auditorium or any other screening facility. The SlingShot team will create an event webpage for you that will take care of all the rest: tickets sales and donations. Then, all you’ll need to do is spread out and get people to come see this inspiring documentary.

Example: Let’s say you have 25 team members and each team member sells 5 - 6 tickets. You just raised $1250 - $1500. With concession sales of $150 and additional donations of $200. You have now raised approximately $1850.

FIRST teams all over the country have had successful fundraisers. FRC Team 144 from Cincinnati, Ohio raised $2,000 before their event even started.

This is an exciting opportunity and we would love to hear from you. If you are interested, contact SlingShot’s Impact Producer, Chloe Simmons, at chloe@whitedwarfprods.com or visit SlingShot's homepage and click “Host a Screening.”

Here’s FRC Team 1675 from West Allis, Wisconsin demonstrating their robot prior to their screening:

We believe you will be able to raise a good bit of money while having a worthwhile and fun experience.

With kindest regards from a longtime member of the FIRST family and the Director/Producer of SlingShot,

Paul Lazarus
