While I understand the desire of choosing the alliance station you drive from from the field perceptive the rule makes life much easier for the people running the FMS. I have previously been an FTAA for FTC and with 4 alliances only it gets a little hectic before a match. This includes less than half as many teams as in an FRC Elimination/Playoff Bracket.
The rule makes the configuration simple for the Field and it is clearly known so you should hopefully be able to work around it.
The field volunteers have enough to do why not make some things easy?
