I'm amused the 10 minutes of terror around QF3 didn't make it into your recap. About 10 minutes after we "solved" the problem, I was slapping my forehead because I realized what the most likely cause was.

Since swapping joysticks fixed things, I suspect it was actually a bad calibration of the joystick. I don't know when the calibration happens with the new DS, but it's either when the joystick is first plugged in, or when the DS enumerates it. If the stick is deflected when the calibration happens, then you end up with zero position being whenever that deflected location is, not at the physical zero of the joystick.
