There is a 20 amp fuse in series with the switch under the switch in the box. and btw you'd be surprised what a light switch can take... I used a light switch to shut off the power supply for my capacitor bank before it fires, the power supply is 4 microwave oven transformers which draw roughly 12amp a piece, and the switch never failed, even after a lot of use. But I understand your cringing and concern for safety.
