I will rigorously test your solution after work today.
Your approach to the problem certainly is valid, but, as you have pointed out, it has inherent flaws with how you constructed the problem.
I solved the problem by searching the space, instead of iteratively marching one point at a time.
Bonus points if you can prove that your algorithm will find a solution given a solution exists.
