The scores range from 1-5, 3 is considered passing, 4 is "exceedingly proficient" in the subject area, and 5 is "exceptionally proficient" in the content area where 2 is "possibly proficient" and 1 is "not proficient".

The percent for each score averages to about 10% 5s, 20% 4s, 40% 3s, 20% 2s, and 10% 1s, although this varies greatly between individual exams.

Most colleges will accept a 3 for 4 or 8 credit hours depending on the course where some more prestigious colleges will only accept 4's and 5's if at all (sometimes they feel the ap course does not cover the content as the school would like it to)
