We had an ultrasonic, as I recall. As well as multiple limit switches.

The ultrasonic sensor was mounted inside (quite literally--mounted inside the tube, pointing to the inside of the robot) of one of our intake arms, and on detecting a tote would tell the arms to close and start the intake wheels spinning to bring the tote in. At that point, the limit switches and encoders took over to stack the tote when it was in position.
