They work with friction wheels that turn in a toroidal cylinder (some car CVTs work in a similar method). They're also really wasteful,
< 85% efficient.
If you were going to use a bicycle hub transmission, get something like a
shimano alfine 11. . Just make sure to cut the current during the shift, because the won't shift under full torque.
