Some things to try:
  • Current limiting traction drive
  • H-drive code
  • Mecanum code
  • Pneumatics
  • PID controlled arm/elevator
  • Some kind of state machine
  • Encoders
  • Ultrasonic/laser distance sensors
  • Gyro-stabilized driving

Just a few ideas.
