I wanted to make this project mostly a design and machining exercise. And an inexpensive one as well. So no heat treating. We're using 1018 cold rolled steel, not much you can do with that other than case harden it a little.
I haven't measured the surfaces for flatness yet, it's on my list. We only took about .015" off each side, so I don't know how much effect that would have on 1" thick plate as far as releasing stresses.
