Our team is deciding this right now. We thought about using an accelerometer, but the trouble is: it may still have a reading when the robot is not inclined (i.e. when the robot is hit, or intentionally accelerated).

Also, has any team successfully used gyro for this purpose?

I think teams used gyros back in 2012 to read when a bridge was successfully balanced, but don't hold me to that.
