You plug the Robo Rio into one of the Ethernet Ports of the Router, and the DS into the other Ethernet Port. That is "tethered", and you must provide for that during competition.

During game play, the DS connects via wifi.

If you want to add additional devices, such as a Camera, you must install a hub on the Robot.

You do NOT need the DS when programming the Robo Rio. So, you can disconnect the DS while programming.

If you have a hub installed, you can tether the PC just like any other device without disconnecting the DS.
