My team has always been a little low on spirit. It's not that they don't love their team, they're just a little reserved when it comes to making noise. Our team captain this year was really against noise makers and when he found out I was making some, he did some pleading. So we came up with noiseless makers. We removed the "jingles" from jingle bells, spray painted the bells red and wired them to black paintsticks. Most of the team loved the idea of disfunctional noisemakers, but we got a few head shakes from some of the other adults. Oh, the noiseless makers fell apart at the Richmond Regional along with our poor robot.
For the Annapolis Regional, I held a spirit contest and offered up a prize to the student or team of students who showed the most team spirit. I gave them extra points for picking on Dave Lavery and for getting some of our shy, quiet students to participate. this contest went over very well, and gave me lots of ideas for next year. And our Flight crew was happy they had people rooting them on.
I know the kids wear their team tee-shirts to school, but I don't think they do anything other than that.
