Man, 512 is plenty of RAM. This summer I was a production software engineer at a game company and I ran 3Dmax 4.2 on my issued p3 550 with 256mb of ram and a old GeForce256. I actually tested a system there with a p4 1.4ghz, 512mb ram, and a GeForce3 (non Ti) and it actually only ran max a little faster then my slow hunk of junk. In the end I think it just comes down to the size of the sceneyou are working with
