Consider using a pot or an absolute encoder instead.

We had a problem with the gyro drift...What may cause it?
Gyro drift is not uncommon. The sensor actually measures spin rate, which is then integrated in the FPGA.

after starting the program it immediately starts drifting at about 1 degree / 5 seconds. How can we fix this problem?
Make sure your gyro is warmed up to temperature and not being jostled when you calibrate it.

Or buy a very expensive gyro.
