This is actually due to the fact that your laptops are holding the DTR pin of the serial port in the wrong state. The DTR on the serial port is connected to the reset line of the Stamp, so basically you're holding the Stamp in reset whenever the laptop is plugged in.

To the original poster: did the Basic Run Error problem happen even when the laptop wasn't plugged in to the programming port?
