Global variables are not a significant source of dietary fiber CPU usage.
I suggest that you at least do a RefNum Set on everything you open anyway, even if you never do a RefNum Get later. That way you'll be able to use Test Mode properly. As a bonus, you'll then also have the option to do a RefNum Get for Autonomous instead of using globals.
