Many teams use external circuits because the BASIC stamp is too slow... Would they really say that it works if it doesn't?
My experience is that the more control the program has over what actually happens the better: dead reckoning, in the "DO THIS, DO THAT, STOP, DO THIS AGAIN" sense does not work with sensitive drive trains/batteries that change motor speeds/etc...
