This would solve a bunch of problems and create a bunch of news ones I'm sure. I really like the idea. One negative side effect I can think of would be that the average competitive level of the teams would probably go down. It would have the feeling of a regional in that some teams out there would have trouble playing the game effectively. It would also pretty much ensure that all the top teams make it to state aka the ceiling would be higher. Plus 2 days = more robotics = more fun.
Another random idea would be to accept the top 30 teams as we currently do, and then take applications from another 2-4 teams (same process as IRI) and establish a committee to admit those teams. It would keep things fair to teams while giving some great teams a chance at redemption after having a bad first regional. Every year it seems that an elite team misses state because they fall flat out of the gate. 3130 is a great example this year. Incredible team that barely misses the cut. If they had been at state they would've been in the playoffs.
