By having try-outs to even join the team, you are immediately discouraging anyone who might think that they "know nothing about robotics" from even thinking about joining the team.
I think it depends greatly on the purpose of your "try-outs"-- I know a number of teams who have done an interview process not as a method of excluding people from the team, but in order to give students the valuable experience of submitting an application and interviewing for a position (which almost all of them will have to do at some point). Within a broader robotics program, it can also help to find out what a student is looking to learn or get out of their experience, and what program might be a better fit for them.
