I always recommend iMovie to people who are looking for software to edit video. It is Mac only, but free and preinstalled on all Macs. Windows Movie maker works for Windows only users.
Check with your school or members of your team to see if anyone has a different program to edit with, like Final Cut, Premiere, or Avid Media Composer. If you don't have access to one of these programs, don't buy it just for First, since they are all rather expensive.
