It's covered I'm sure in the 254 and 1538 branding documents, BUT I'm going to pull it out specifically here in the case that y'all don't read the whole thing.
If the school district doesn't mandate it otherwise, try to avoid having your team name be based around your school mascot. There are tons of bears, yellow jackets, wildcats, whatever mascot you (most likely) have around the country - meaning there are also a ton of Robobears, Robojackets, Robocats, etc as well. That in and of itself will largely reduce the chance of having a duplicate name. There are of course exceptions. One of the schools in our district is the Oilers - if were an individual school team, we could conceivably have built around that mascot and still be pretty unique.
You can take this as a "do as I say, not as I do" if you want - our name is Pearadox (based out of Pearland, TX), but there is a Team Paradox and an Inverse Paradox. Even though our spellings, team colors, logos, team numbers, etc are all significantly different - it could lead to some confusion at an event if we both attended.
