I looked at it differently.

As soon as the 1/2 champs were announced, it was clear that it was already too late to prevent it. Commitments had been made. For at least a few years, that was the way it was going to be.

I look at this announcement as a recognition that people want some sort of season ending event that was a big deal, and that the idea that there could be two world champions wouldn't fly. So, we know it's on the leaders' radar to have some sort of big deal event. If they manage to come up with something that works to fill that role, then it's awesome. If the event comes up lame, then we know they are looking for a solution.

So, I try to be a glass half full. It not only is better than nothing, but shows an appreciation for the thing that so many people want. Will it work? If not, then it will be modified as soon as financial commitments and stadium reservations can be dealt with.

For now, though, what it means is that every team that takes to the field at their district events in 8 weeks (!) will know that they are stepping on the path that ends at a world championship. We don't know what that will look like, but it's still kind of cool.
