Re: [FRC Blog] Safety, Safety, Safety

Safety is one area in FIRST culture that I see as lacking. Not that teams or individuals don't pay it lip service by papering events with fliers about glasses and screaming "ROBOT!" at the top of their lungs, but it's more that high schoolers are still immature and sometimes forget their priorities.

Mentors in industry will see this all the time, usually companies have 4 pillars/principals/beliefs about safety (quickly googling, I'm shamelessly copying this from Heinz):
Nothing we do is worth getting hurt for;
Occupational Health & Safety can be managed;
Every injury/illness could and should have been prevented; and
Occupational Health & Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Remember that, as mentors, we're trying to develop the next generation of adults. It's best if our team mates stay together in one piece, and go home in the same condition as they come in. Please emphasize with your students that they are the most important asset of the team, that they - and not the robot - are the reason we're all here and that FIRST exists.
