I don't have a ton of experience with this, but I can speak from the experience I have. What I have found is that as long as your bearing is well constrained axially and radially (i.e. squeezed along the shaft and the bearing hole isn't oversized), you should be fine. Either axial or radial play will give you problems with bearing misalignment and possibly even bearings coming loose.
