Ultimately this defense is physically constrained by the offensive robot being directly in front of the scoring element as it's going up, ideally.

Pilot processing speed and efficiency is the constraint here. You've got 2 pilots and, potentially, 3 robots placing gears. I'm not promoting it as a dedicated strategy, but an opportunistic one VS a disorganized alliance. I can envision some pilots thinking they need to place a gear immediately after lifting it, leaving a gear hanging, or leaving a robot waiting and vulnerable for longer than necessary. Mostly, think of it as a caution to drivers and pilots that the gear exchange needs to be fast and actively secured.
Relatedly, the lift directly in front of your station is probably the safest to leave a gear on if you HAVE to, thanks to the terrible opposing visibility.
