I think a hopper would be pretty effective. The balls are very small relative to the robot, so a large box could hold quite a few balls without needing to index them before they are put into the hopper. I think gravity fed hoppers are a lot harder to design without jamming than actively fed hoppers. Yes it is possible, but it requires non symmetrical choke points, which tend to eat up space. I've been thinking about a hopper with a plexiglass bottom and several polychord belts that run at high speeds towards the flywheel elevator. This would allow controlled feeding that doesn't rely as heavily on gravity. It also means the floor could be almost flat, saving space. This would work well with a 3-4 ball wide flywheel. Last year's vex game was shooting similar sized balls, and the most prominent design was to use a flywheel with a lot of mass, a decent amount of contact time, and very little compression.
