Is it worthwhile to build a device to pick gears off the floor? This could save a lot of time running back & fourth across the field, but the design would be a major challenge, considering the new robot envelopes rule.

We may be faced with bulldozing gears out of our way, if dropped right at the post ....or by the loaders and hoppers. Some analysis of the geometry and dimensions will help us better understand the hazards and how it relates to bot design and clearances. See pic of a gear on the carpet - under a gear on post:
