As long as whatever sawdust or material you are putting on will leave the robot and stay on the playing field, it is illegal to put them on. FIRST is trying to have as clean of a playing field as possible.

As for nuts and bolts that came off during a match because of all the pushing and pulling... Well, start using lock nuts or lock washers.
