I don't mean to be rude, but you argued both sides, very well I might add.
I thought about this a few time through out the year last year, and I still haven't really come to a concluion. One option saves code the other time. I guess to me last year I was on the field so I set the trim before every match and there was not problem until the driver hit the trim wheels. I guess this can happen even with an auto calibration so it prolly don't matter. What I found easiest last year was taking advantage of the user mode that is on the 2003 controllers. I used it to calibrate the joysticks and that worked pretty well.
I guess my indecicevness will in the end prolly make up my mind for me.
