Last year, we did exactly that with 13 teams from the NYC area. In four weekends (Saturdays for 6 hours) we built a K.I.S.S. robot in the hallway of the university using simple tools- hecksaw and hand drill using spare FIRST parts. And it runs!
We are planning this years workshop right now.
