LCD sizes report the true size of the screen. Monitor sizes are the size of the screen plus the surrounding frame. CRTs also report a viewable size which is equivilant to a LCDs size.

For example, a 15" CRT will often have a viewable size of 14". A 17" CRT will have a viewable size of 16" or so. Sometimes, 21" CRTs will have a viewable size as low as 19.5"

Another part is the perceived size. The 18" LCDs at school look bigger then the 19" CRT (18" viewable) that I have now.

I replaced my parents 17" CRT with a 15" LCD and haven't heard any complaints (we'll see what happens when he reads this thread, though
