It appears that intentional contact with the vertical supports is prohibited. Please refer to the Tournament Rules, Section 7.6:

<T04> Robots may not intentionally:
Detach Parts (no connection at all to a robot);

Damage another robot;

Tip over another robot;

Attach themselves to the vertical supports of the pull-up bar system;

Attach themselves to the railings/walls of any field
