You don't need to create a variable that's a word. If all you need is a counter, you can simulate a word with 2 bytes. You'll be able to count up to 65536.

pseudocode:

byte i, j

i = 0
j = 0


main loop:

if (i < 255)
{
i++
}
else
{
i = 0
j++
}
