no matter what you build, because if you are far behind, remember to KISS or KISES and that if is very important to be able to do one thing and do it well.
Personally I think that the simplest design to build would be a square that has a bite taken out of it (so that it looks kind of like:

but have a bit of a steeper plow kind of thing so that you can collect balls (obviously work out dimensions). and have a solid drive train so that you can run every match and are reliable .... a good human player would be an asset because getting the balls isnt worth anything if you cant shoot them in the goals .. and if you make sure the bot can go backwards, you are able to push the mobile goals from the back of your bot
and even if you arent ranked in the top 8th, you have a good chance of being picked for an alliance if you are reliable (i know im repeating myself)
