That sounds very much like the torque setting referred to above. If the problem was the shifter popping out of gear then I don't think your bot would move at all.

The large black cover over the front of the transmission has numbers on it which represent the level of torque you will get before "slipping". I would guess that is the clicking sound you are hearing. If you turn that cover past its highest setting you will get to an small graphic that looks like a drill bit. That is where you want it set.
