We ran into a similar problem last year (and the year before) when we kept losing our OI power supplies. One VERY IMPORTANT thing that we found out is that if you get a replacement supply from anywhere other than Innovation First, make sure that it is AT LEAST a 1500mA supply (with 12VDC output, plug tip is positive). While a lower level supply will power the OI, the performance and range of the eWave radio modem will become questionable. The OI will light up, and everything will look like it should be working, but you can't get any signal to the RC (or if you can, the working range may to limited to ten feet or less). This sounds like the same symptoms you are seeing.
You can get a direct replacement unit for the OI power supply from Radio Shack. Part #273-1779, it usually runs about $20. We have tried using lower level (cheaper) supplies before, and every time we had disappointing results.
